Petition for Denmark to purchase California for $1 trillion has 220,000 signatures

As President Donald Trump continues to rhetorically flirt with annexation of other nations, an online petition for Denmark to purchase California for $1 trillion is garnering hefty support.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the petition, named “Denmarkification,” had received more than 223,000 signatures, according to its webpage.

The petition is seen as a response to President Trump’s continued interest in purchasing Greenland, a territory of Denmark. Trump has seemed focused on three major pieces of land, including the Panama Canal, Canada, and the world’s largest island.

In the days leading up to his inauguration, Trump was asked about how he would acquire Greenland, to which he said it was necessary and wouldn’t rule out using the U.S. military.

Despite Greenland’s leader, Múte B. Egede, Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and Panama’s President, José Raúl Mulino Quintero, all pushing back against Trump’s efforts, the president continues to show interest.

“Greenland is for the Greenlandic people. We do not want to be Danish. We do not want to be American. We want to be Greenlandic,” Egede said last month.

As Trump’s efforts continue, many are pushing back against his attempted land grab.

In the Denmarkifcation petition, the authors write that Trump may be open to selling since its political leaders often push back against the president’s policies.

“Let’s be honest – Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan. He’s called it ‘the most ruined state in the Union’ and has feuded with its leaders for years,” the petition states. “We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price.”

The organizers of the petition are looking for a crowdfunding goal of $1 trillion to buy the state, though it isn’t collecting donations, only signatures.

The Denmarkifcation petition is not the only one to pop up in recent weeks.

Similarly, a website urging American states to “Join Canada” has popped up online, urging states to leave the U.S. and join with Canada.

“51st state? We say nay! 11th province… You say: eh?” the website says with a cartoon picture of a goose in a Canadian Mountie uniform.

“So, we heard a rumor that someone’s planning to annex Canada, eh? Well, two can play at that game! Why add a 51st state, when you can join Canada, eh?” the website goes on to ask. “Do you want your state to be the 11th province of the True North strong and free? Sign up and have YOUR say!”

The site is taking votes in a poll to see who will join the country and take its offer of “healthcare, hockey, and unlimited maple syrup” first.
