A natural disaster could impact that availability of necessary medications nationwide, according to one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the country.
Pfizer has let hospitals know that, due to circumstances beyond their control, dozens of its products could be subject to “continued or new supply disruptions,” multiple outlets report.
Pfizer’s plant in Rocky Mount, N.C., was damaged severely by an EF-3 tornado last week.
The prescription medication goliath wrote in a letter to hospitals that over 30 of their products had less than three months of inventory left in the distribution chain.
“In order to provide customers with the ability to plan for patient care today, we have identified a subset of Rocky Mount products by NDC that may experience continued or new supply disruptions in the near-term due to this weather event,” the company wrote in the letter, according to CNN. “This subset is based on Pfizer market share and inventory levels of less than 3 months across our Pfizer distribution centers and the wholesale chain.”
Including in the list: certain dosages of epinephrine, fentanyl and lidocaine.
Pfizer stressed that using “three months of inventory” as a metric is due to an abundance of caution based on current data. It is not indicative of any production restart estimates.
