QUOGUE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — A dead shark washed up on a beach in Quogue on Wednesday and washed back out to sea before police could secure it, according to the Quogue Village Police Department.

A local resident reported the shark on Rogers Beach along the Westhampton Dunes just after 9:30 a.m., officials said.


The animal was discovered amid a series of shark attacks and sightings on Long Island.

The shark, which was about seven-to-eight feet long, according to police, washed out to sea authorities could secure it.

The South Fork National History Museum shark research program is monitoring the situation, and law enforcement are searching for the animal’s corpse.

In the meantime, police warned swimmers and boaters to steer clear of the area.
