Prince's iconic 1984 film "Purple Rain" is being adapted into a Broadway-style musical almost eight years after the artist's death.

The news was shared by producer Orin Wolf, who announced Monday that he's developing Purple Rain for the stage.

However, Wolf gave no other indication as to where it may initially open, nor is there a date certain for production to get underway.

Those who own the rights to his music catalog are said to be supportive of the production.

The movie won the Academy Award for Best Original Song Score.

Prince died of a drug overdose at Paisley Park in Chanhassen almost 8 years ago at the age of 57.
