Republicans flip control of the Senate

For the first time in four years, Republicans have regained control of the United States Senate, flipping two seats that were held by non-Republican candidates.

The projection for the Republican victory comes from The Associated Press.

One of the seats to turn red was held by Independent Sen. Joe Manchin (WV), who had won the seat as a Democrat before leaving the party during his term. He has since retired, and Democrats failed to regain control of the seat, with Republican Jim Justice winning the West Virginia seat.

The other Democratic seat to be flipped red came in Ohio, as Republican Bernie Moreno beat incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown (D).

Republicans now have 51 seats, at the time this story was published, with several seats still undecided.

Republicans are expected to maintain control in the House, though neither party has gained the majority 218 seats in the chamber at the time of this story’s publishing.
