Online rumor mill says Disney Channel is going away. Here's the truth

Disneyphiles are in a full-on panic after internet rumors started swirling that the Disney Channel is shutting down. Could this be the end of a beloved era for Disney fans, or is it just another exaggerated rumor making the rounds?

Here's the truth: it's a little bit of both -- depending on where you live.

The rumor mill started churning on December 2, after a viral post on X claimed the Disney Channel would stop broadcasting in early 2025.

"Disney Channel will stop airing for good January 2025 after 27 years of history," the post warned.

With the popularity of the Disney+ streaming service, many took the post as fact. But it appears there's a bit of misunderstanding.

The kids' cable network is not shutting down globally, the company confirmed to USA Today.

"We look forward to continuing to offer this best-in-class programming that kids love," a spokesperson for the Walt Disney Co. told the outlet, adding that there's a full slate of children's programming already planned through 2026.

However, Disney is closing its subscription-based TV channels in France and  Brazil in early 2025, including National Geographic, Disney Channel, Star Channel, Cinecanal, FX and Baby TV, according to reports. ESPN channels will be the only ones retained in those countries by the company.

In a statement to Inside the Magic, Disney said the move was "in response to the transformations in the local media and entertainment landscape and to ensure we continue to evolve and meet the needs of our consumers with agility and innovation."

Viewers losing TV channels can still access most Disney programs through Disney+, reports noted.
