“FBI is on the scene and supporting Secret Service responding to shots fired near White House grounds - we will update the public as we’re able,” said Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Kash Patel in a Saturday evening X post.

FOX News reported that the White House was on lockdown after as many as 30 shots were fired at the executive mansion as Memorial Day weekend gets started. It said correspondents reported hearing multiple shots fired near the Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

“The U.S. Secret Service was heard telling reporters to ‘get down,’ before the press were ushered into the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room in the West Wing,” FOX News said. The outlet also noted that President Donald Trump announced his administration was close to finalizing a deal to end the war with Iran.

According to CNN, two people were shot in an encounter with Secret Service near the White House, per a law enforcement official. That incident reportedly occurred near the intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and 17th Street Northwest.

In a Truth Social post from Saturday, Trump said he was in the White House Oval Office.

"Thank God President Trump is safe," said a Saturday X post from the House Republicans account at around 7:30 p.m. ET Saturday. "Endless gratitude to the Secret Service for their immediate, heroic response. Political violence has to stop."

FOX News said that a male suspect was taken down by Secret Service.

Trump has been the subject of assassination attempts in the past, including an incident while on the campaign trail in 2024 that resulted in a bullet grazing his ear. Most recently, a shooter was apprehended at the White House Correspondents’ dinner in April.
