A Subway in Rincon, Georgia, has recently come under fire after the sign outside the restaurant made a joke about the recent Titan submersible tragedy, remarking that its “subs don’t implode.”
The joke was in reference to the recent OceanGate tragedy that saw the company’s Titan submersible implode while on its way to view the wreckage of the Titanic. The incident claimed the lives of all five passengers on board.
A photo of the sign was shared on Facebook by one Georgia resident, and it has since gone viral.
“That’s just wrong,” one user commented on the post.
“That’s really bad, bet the owner doesn’t know,” another wrote on Facebook.
The photo has also made the rounds on other social media sites, with some calling out Subway’s main account on Twitter, calling it “distasteful.”
Subway restaurants are franchise operated, but NBC News reached out to the company for comment, and it confirmed it was aware of the sign and has spoken to the franchisee about it.
“We have been in contact with the franchise about this matter and made it clear that this kind of comment has no place in our business,” a Subway spokesperson tells TODAY.com. “The sign has since been removed.”
Timothy Mauck, the man who posted the photo initially, shared with NBC News that he shared his post because he found it disrespectful.
“I’m sure it would be disrespectful to the family, you know what I mean?” Mauck said. “It was a very uncalled for kind of thing because that’s a place of business, and for one of their employees to put that up on their sign that only lets everybody know that the situation is a joke.”
