TikTok CEO to attend Trump’s inauguration day after platform ban

TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew is set to attend President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, a day after his social media site is set to be banned in the US.

News of Chew’s attendance at the event was reported by NBC News, which cited sources familiar with the plans.

Like Chew, several other tech executives will be present when Trump is sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. Among those to RSVP yes include Tesla CEO and Trump ally Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos.

Last year, legislators in Congress passed a bill that will see TikTok banned on Jan. 19 unless its China-based parent company ByteDance divests and sells to a US buyer. Some have speculated that Trump may try to stop the ban or that the Supreme Court may step in.

If the ban does go through, The Information reported on Tuesday that the company intends to shut off its app for US users.

Trump’s incoming national security adviser, Mike Waltz, shared on Wednesday with Fox News that the incoming president was intending to save TikTok once he returns to office.

“TikTok itself is a fantastic platform,” Waltz told Fox News. “I wish I could have it on my phone. The algorithm is amazing. We’re going to find a way to preserve it but protect people’s data. And that’s the deal that will be in front of us.”
