The federal civil rights trial for three former Minneapolis police officers who are charged with George Floyd’s death is set to begin on Thursday, but now the state criminal trial has been continued to June 13.

While jury selection was set to take place on March 7 for the trial of J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas Lane, and Tou Thao, attorneys for the former police officers have petitioned Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill for a continuance, allowing time for the federal civil rights trial.

The former officers have been charged with one count each of aiding and abetting second-degree murder and aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.

Cahill’s order which granted the motion to reschedule, gave a time frame of March 14 to Jan. 9, 2023, signing off on the new trial date on Wednesday.

Derek Chauvin, who was sentenced to 22½ years in prison for the murder conviction, was set to stand trial with the other officers for the federal charges but pleaded guilty to the charges last month.
