Former President Donald Trump, the current GOP candidate frontrunner for the 2024 election, has claimed that the surprise Hamas terrorist attack on Israel that spurred the start of the Israel-Hamas War over the weekend wouldn’t have happened on his watch.
However, he appeared to have some difficulty pronouncing the name of the Palestinian terrorist group that organized the attack. When Trump pronounced “Hamas” during a Saturday speech at a rally in Iowa that was aired by Newsmax, the name came out more like “hummus.”
Hummus, the popular Middle Eastern dish made from pureed chickpeas.
Late Night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel mocked Trump’s pronunciation during an opening monologue this week. He joked that the former president demonstrated his “deep well of insight,” into the situation.
“Yes, the hummus, the baba ghanoush, the falafel,” Kimmel quipped after playing the clip.
According to The Independent, the former president was also widely mocked on social media after the clip went viral. For example, Ron Filipkowski, editor-in-chief of the Meidas Touch, said “Apparently, Israel was attacked by hummus.”
However, this criticism didn’t seem to slow down Trump’s comments about the war.
“Many are using an example of ‘just the way ISIS was defeated in Iraq and Syria, HAMAS will likewise be defeated.’ Please remember that it was the Trump Administration that defeated ISIS, and quickly, after years of futile attempts by previous administrations!” he said in a Friday Truth Social post. “Someday we will be given proper credit for all of the many successes we had. In the meantime, we will do it again in 2024! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN.”
Deaths on both sides of the war in and around the Gaza strip increased as its one-week anniversary draws near Saturday, CBS News reported.
