Ukraine launches drone attack at Moscow, prompting airport closures

On Sunday, Ukraine launched its largest offensive drone attack on the Russian capital city of Moscow since the war began in 2022. The attack injured one and resulted in three major airports in the country diverting flights.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense says that it has “intercepted and destroyed” 34 drones over Moscow that were launched by Ukraine, CNN reported.

The attack comes as Russia fired 145 drones against Ukraine.

Speaking about Ukraine’s offensive, Moscow’s regional Governor Andrei Corobyov called it a “massive attack” that resulted in two houses catching fire in a nearby town and a 52-year-old woman being hospitalized for serious injuries, NBC News reported.

All three of the airports that were closed by the strike have reopened and resumed their normal operations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Russia had launched “a record 145 Shaheds and other strike drones against Ukraine” on Saturday night. He also said that this week alone, Russia had used “more than 800 guided aerial bombs, around 600 strike drones, and nearly 20 missiles.”

At least two people were injured, and buildings were damaged in Ukraine’s southern region of Odesa on Saturday night.

“The enemy has once again launched a massive attack on our region,” a Ukraine emergency services account shared on social media. “Garages with cars and property were on fire, residential buildings, shops were damaged.”
