Walmart is launching a free Text to Shop service that allows customers to add items to their online shopping basket using text messages.
The function is connected to a user's Walmart account and knows what a customer's usual items are.
Shoppers can text the name of a general item like "cereal" or "half gallon milk," and the retailer uses your purchase history to add the brand and type typically ordered to your cart. If you're shopping for something you haven't bought before, text the item you're looking for (in as little as one word), and Walmart will provide a few options to choose from.
The service also allows customers to view their cart, add or remove items, and it can be used to schedule a time for both store pickup and delivery.
The company says shoppers utilizing the service have access to the full selection of Walmart's products, including items from their local store and from Walmart.com.
"Run out of protein powder making your morning smoothie? Text Walmart to add it to your cart. Hosting a few more people at the dinner table tonight than you originally planned? Text Walmart to quickly reorder the ingredients you need and schedule your pickup," the company said in a statement. "Planning a backyard campout with the kids? Make sure to add s’mores fixings to your list, then schedule for delivery to give yourself extra time to enjoy with the kiddos."
Here's how it works:
• Shop -- Text to search for items and add them to your cart. Re-order your favorites or just text what you want, and Walmart will find the most relevant items.
• Cart -- Text "What's in my cart?" to view and update your cart, no matter when you started shopping.
• Schedule -- Text "Done shopping" and set a time for store pickup or home delivery, or get your order shipped to your address.
• Checkout -- Text "Checkout" to confirm and place your order.
Shoppers can also add or remove items from a previously placed order via text, up to three hours before the order is scheduled for pickup or to go out for delivery.
The service uses a shopper's preferred pickup location, address and payment method saved in their Walmart account settings.
The Text to Shop service is available to customers on iOS and Android devices. There's nothing to download. If you have a Walmart account, you can sign up for free to use the service.
