Weeks after a report last month alleged that multibillionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk used drugs while on the campaign trail with now President Donald Trump last year, Musk has shared results of a recent drug test.
He posted a photo that appears to be results of testing on a urine sample from Musk from Fastest Labs of South Austin with the caption “lol” on X, a social media platform that he owns. According to the image, Musk provided the sample on June 11. It was received June 13 and the report was issued this Monday.
Results showed that Musk tested negative for the following: benzodiazepines, amphetamine, ecstasy, barbiturates, buprenorphine, cocaine, ketamine, methadone, meperidine, zolpidems, opiates, PCP, oxycodone, propoxyphene, cannabinoids, tramadol, ethanol, fentanyl, carisoprodol.
In its May 30 bombshell report, the New York Times said that Musk “drug use was more intense than previously known,” as he joined Trump on the campaign trail last year.
“He told people he was taking so much ketamine, a powerful anesthetic, that it was affecting his bladder, a known effect of chronic use,” said the outlet. “He took Ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms. And he traveled with a daily medication box that held about 20 pills, including ones with the markings of the stimulant Adderall, according to a photo of the box and people who have seen it.”
Per the Addiction Center, urine testing – the most common form of drug testing – detects if a substance has been used in the past few days for most drugs. The New York Times noted that, although Musk’s company SpaceX is required to be drug-free as a major government contractor, it also said that “people close to the process” there alleged that Musk has been given advance notice of drug tests.
“The allegations in the Times report relate to his alleged use of drugs in 2024, and a test completed in June would not have been able to detect substance abuse from more than six months ago,” The Independent pointed out.
Neither Musk, his lawyer nor SpaceX responded to The Times regarding the allegations of drug use. However, it said that Musk previously mentioned that he was prescribed ketamine for depression. During a press conference with Trump after the article was published he questioned the newspaper’s credibility.
Trump also told reporters that he thought Musk was “fantastic.”
That was just before the two men engaged in a public spat on social media. It seemed to start over the “Big Beautiful Bill” spending package that has been championed by Trump and criticized by Musk and eventually escalated to threats regarding contracts and Musk making claims about Trump and the files regarding notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. It seems like the Musk-Trump fight simmered down a bit last week, per the Associated Press.
After the 130-day deadline to complete work with the Department of Government Efficiency, Musk also recently said he would step down from the government position. His brief stint leading DOGE coincided with a period of slipping sales for his electric vehicle company Tesla, as well as rumors that he would be replaced as CEO of that company, though those rumors were quickly debunked.
In another Tuesday X post, Musk said: “I hereby challenge the NYT and WSJ to take drug tests and publish the results! They won’t, because those hypocrites are guilty as sin.”
