Governor Tim Walz is on the move!

The Minnesota Governor’s mansion is set to go under renovations to rebuild and repair some of the damages caused to the home throughout its years of use and to bring it up to today’s standards. Because of this, Walz is packing up.

Torey Van Oot from Axios joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Adam Carter and Jordana Green to discuss numerous topics, including what Walz’s relocation will cost the state.

Van Oot shared that the state-owned governor’s residence is in serious need of some tender love and care as it needs repairs from “security to plumbing.”

Now, the governor and his family have been moved out of the residence, and instead, the state has found them a rental to stay at until the renovations are complete. The only thing is the rental costs $17,000 a month.

“The house that the state found for them happens to be a lakeside, quite large, home over in Sunfish Lake,” Van Oot shared, noting that the home actually belonged to Mike McFadden, who was a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in 2014.

Van Oot shared that while it’s an “eye-popping price tag,” the governor finding a home to rent isn’t the same as an everyday citizen.

“The governor has to be able to host events and receptions. The house needs to be able to accommodate security,” Van Oot shared.

Van Oot also noted that while the administration might be asking for a little bit of help in the legislature, it does look like they have budgeted the rental into the total renovations.
