Last Wednesday, a photo went viral of an injured Ukrainian pregnant woman being cared for by emergency workers after her hospital was bombed. Today, both the woman and baby died from their injuries, according to a report.

The Associated Press reported that the woman at the maternity hospital in Mariupol passed away, adding that they could not get her name before her body was retrieved by family.

The family was quick to recover her body so that she would not be placed in one of several mass graves in Mariupol.

At least three people were killed in the attack and 17 injured on Wednesday.

While any attack on a maternity hospital would be bad, this one was even worse as it came during a 12-hour pause in hostilities that Russia had agreed to, CNN reported. The pause was to allow refugees the ability to evacuate.

Mariupol officials called the destruction “enormous,” claiming Russian forces had dropped bombs from the air.

Russia has continuously been accused of targeting civilians, and Mariupol’s mayor Vadym Boychenko, was one of those calling out Russia, saying its targeting of civilian buildings was an act of genocide.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called the bombing of the hospital an “atrocity,” however, Russia has pointed the finger elsewhere for the attack.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the radical Azoz battalion’s base carried out the attack and a Russian Ministry of Defense spokesperson called it a “provocation” denying Russian involvement.
