Republican Senator Rand Paul has been placed in time-out by the video-sharing site YouTube.

Paul was issued a seven-day suspension after posting a video disputing the effectiveness of masks in preventing COVID-19.

And he isn't taking it lying down.

Paul tweeted his suspension was a badge of honor, adding, "Leftwing cretins at Youtube banning me for 7 days for a video that quotes 2 peer reviewed articles saying cloth masks don’t work."

In taking the video down from its site, YouTube issued a statement on the matter.

“We removed content from Senator Paul’s channel for including claims that masks are ineffective in preventing the contraction or transmission of COVID-19, in accordance with our COVID-19 medical misinformation policies,” the statement read. “We apply our policies consistently across the platform, regardless of speaker or political views.”

Paul’s claims in the video run in direct contradiction of guidance from the CDC, as he said, "most of the masks you get over the counter don’t work. They don’t prevent infection ... Trying to shape human behavior isn't the same as following the actual science, which tells us that cloth masks don’t work."

As a result of the suspension, which was issued Tuesday, the Kentucky senator will be unable to share new videos on his account until August 17.
