Edible products are now on sale in Minnesota that contain a small amount of the marijuana-based chemical that creates a high.

That's according to a new law that was passed during the legislative session and took effect July 1.

"This is not marijuana, and these products are going to be highly regulated," said Zach Rohr, owner of Minny Grown, a Cannon Falls-based company that makes and sells these products. "These products are safe."

Rohr tells WCCO's Vineeta Sawkar that it was a surprise that this law was passed.

People ages 21 and older can buy these new THC products, which must be derived from legally certified hemp.

The amount of THC in these products is five miligrams, about half the standard dose found in recreational marijuana products in other states.

"It's not a high amount, so anyone who does want to try this product they can start with a little bit less," he said. "But even if they do a five-miligram dose this is not something that's going to put you on a psycho-active trip."
