Teen COVID cases surging in Minnesota while vaccine appointments go unfilled

MDH recommends more frequent testing for middle and high school students and broadens vaccine community outreach

MDH calls for more frequent COVID testing for teens

State health officials are recommending more frequent COVID testing for middle and high school students as cases surge once again.

State data show more than 45,000 positive COVID cases among 15-19 year- olds right now.

Commissioner Jan Malcolm says the numbers are higher than last November's surge, and could snuff out prom and graduation plans if they don't come down.

"Those things are not a given with case rates where they are today," said Malcolm.

Starting next week, Malcolm says the state will be increasing testing, and recommends all middle and high school students get tested every two weeks. For students who play sports, the recommendation is to be tested weekly. This, as state health leaders now say students in outdoor sports will have the option to remove their masks while on the field or court, but must continue to wear them while not actively playing.

On the vaccine front, 53% of Minnesotans have received at least one dose, while 37% are fully-vaccinated. Malcolm acknowledges they've had a hard time filling available vaccine appointments in some areas of the state. She says this is not unexpected, and they plan to ramp up their community outreach.

"To work with employers, to work with community groups, to sponsor and organize events that are more accessible and perhaps get a different response when they're organized by trusted community leaders," said Malcolm.
