The Minnesota Timberwolves are continuing their playoff push coming off a big win on Monday night in New York City, despite the absence of two of the team’s stars.
Timberwolves head coach Chris Finch joined News Talk 830 WCCO’s Chad Hartman to discuss the team and its recent struggles.
The Wolves picked up a big win after having dropped three games in a row, with some losses being caused by late-game mistakes. Finch says this has been a storyline throughout the season, despite the team playing well.
“We’ve been playing really good basketball. We just haven’t been able to win games,” Finch remarked on the season.
Finch says that in the team’s recent losses, it’s been “one thing or another,” whether it be the offense getting stale or not being able to get a stop on the defensive end. Despite this, Finch praised his players, calling them a resilient group that’s played competitively, no matter who is in or out of the lineup.
Among the most concerning points for Timberwolves fans is the current state of Karl-Anthony Towns, who has been absent from the team since November, when he suffered a reported calf injury.
All-star guard Anthony Edwards has also been rehabbing an injury he suffered to his ankle during a game with the Chicago Bulls last week.
In a recent interview, Towns shared that he had suffered a setback in his rehabilitation, forcing him to miss more time than he or the team previously expected. Finch shared that while the team didn’t discuss the setback, it didn’t occur at a time when he was close to returning.
“We never expected that we were on the verge of any kind of return. It was early in the process of his coming back,” Finch said.
Reports circulated on Tuesday that there was optimism in the organization that Towns and Edwards would return together on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks. However, Finch says he isn’t confident it will happen.
“They’re both in evaluation periods. They’re definitely on separate timelines,” Finch said, noting that they aren’t sure if they will both be ready to go at the same time.
When it comes to KAT’s injury, Finch says they know he is “close” to making a return, and the hope is he’s back on the floor before the season ends. As for Edwards, Finch noted that he should be back by the season’s end as well.
“We’re pretty confident at some point before the end of the season, we’re going to see them out there, but I can’t tell you that’s not tomorrow,” Finch said.
