NEWARK, N.J. (WCBS 880) — Dramatic body camera footage released by New Jersey Transit Police shows officers saving the life of a newborn baby girl who stopped breathing in a train station bathroom.

The officers responded to a women's restroom at Newark Penn Station around 10 a.m. Tuesday for a report of a baby in distress.

When officers Bryan Richards and Alberto Nunes arrived they found a woman, cradling the baby, who was gray and not breathing.

Richards immediately started chest compressions, but the baby remained unresponsive.

He radioed EMS for help, but decided instead to rush the baby to a hospital in a police cruiser after "realizing the dire need for immediate medial care," NJ Transit Police said.

"Let's take the car," Richards can be heard saying in the video as he runs out of the bathroom with the baby in his arms and to a police vehicle outside the station.

Nunes drove while Richards continued to perform CPR in the car.

The baby girl started breathing just moments before they reached the hospital.

"There we go, good girl," Richards can be heard saying as he hears the baby's first cries.

NJ Transit said the baby is doing well.

NJ Transit Police posted the full video of the rescue on their Facebook page. Portions of the footage were redacted to respect the privacy of the mother and newborn child.
