You don't have to hit the brakes to be gentle on the earth.
But given the fact that automobiles emit carbons, it's important to explore green ways to travel that will reduce your impact on nature.
Most people can't just ditch their cars or stop going on trips. But there are still many ways to be a shepherd of the environment when you leave home and go traveling.
As we continue our 50 Ways in 50 Days countdown to Earth Day (April 22, 2020 marks the holiday's 50th anniversary), here are six ways that you can travel sustainably.
Walk If It's Close

If your destination is a mile or less away, walk instead of taking your car. A mile of moderate walking takes about 20 minutes, only slightly longer than a drive that's going to take a few minutes anyway. Walking saves gas, is better for the environment and comes with the added benefits of exercise. To keep the earth and yourself healthy, walk if it's close.
Book a Closer Vacation

If you're planning your next getaway, don't go so far. Picking a destination closer to where you live will limit the impact of fuel you use to get there. In addition to the environmental benefits, traveling locally will also give you an opportunity to explore the impressive landmarks and sites that you didn't realize were right under your nose.
Check Your Tire Pressure

Tires inflated to their correct levels can improve fuel economy by up to 3%. Conversely, under-inflated tires can scientifically lower gas mileage. Look in your owner's manual or on the driver-side door jam for the proper levels for your vehicle. Also, try and keep your car light by removing any unnecessary cargo from your trunk. Added weight will definitely decrease fuel economy.
Reduce the Amount of Trips You Take

The fuel you use to get around can add up when you're running a lot of errands. Combine as many chores and tasks as you can in one trip rather than making several long trips. Not only will you save on the gas your vehicle is using, but you'll also reduce the wear and tear on your car.
Leave No Trace

A camping trip is an excellent and intimate way to experience the great outdoors. But make sure you leave a positive impact on nature, even once you're gone. Have a "leave no trace" trip, making sure you leave your campsite in the same or better condition than you found it. Pack all your personal belongings, discard of your trash, and follow any other official rules your campgrounds may have for visitors.
Observe No-Drive Days

Tired of getting caught up in morning traffic on your way to work? Instead of driving to the office every day, pick one day a week where you get to your job by carpooling, taking public transportation, biking or even walking. You'll not only reduce your carbon footprint, but you may even find starting your day without the morning commute less stressful.
