Bills acquire Amari Cooper from Browns

This is now the third time Cooper has been traded in his NFL career

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR Sports Radio 550) - In the few hours after the New York Jets landed star wide receiver Davante Adams in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Buffalo Bills countered that with a move of their own at the wide receiver position.

The Bills have acquired wide receiver Amari Cooper from the Cleveland Browns as part of a deal that includes the swapping of multiple picks. FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report the trade on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The full trade will see the Bills receiving Cooper and a 2025 sixth-round pick, while the Browns will get a 2025 third-round pick and a 2026 seventh-round pick in return.

Cooper has spent parts of the last three seasons in Cleveland with the Browns, accounting for 2,660 receiving yards on 174 total receptions and 16 touchdowns. So far through five games this season, the 30-year-old has reeled in 24 passes for 250 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Arguably Cooper's best season in the NFL came this past year with a career-best 1,250 receiving yards on 128 receptions (17.4 yards per-reception) and five touchdowns.

Originally the fourth overall pick of the Oakland Raiders in the 2015 NFL Draft, Cooper has already been on quite the journey through his career in the league.

After spending parts of the first four years of his NFL career with the Raiders, accounting for 3,183 yards receiving, 19 touchdowns and two Pro Bowl nods, the Dallas Cowboys made a massive move before the 2018 NFL Trade Deadline to acquire Cooper for a 2019 first-round pick.

In parts of four seasons with the Cowboys, Cooper continued to flourish with 3,893 yards receiving on 292 grabs and scoring 27 touchdowns, and was, once again, a two-time Pro Bowler in 2018 and 2019.

The during the 2022 offseason, the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Browns that saw a 2022 fifth-round pick go back to Dallas, and also included a swap of sixth-round picks in 2022.

Cooper joins a struggling Bills wide receivers room this season that hasn't been able to generate enough separation or speed down the field for quarterback Josh Allen. Leading the way currently is third-year pro Khalil Shakir with 249 yards receiving and two touchdowns in five games played.

Also a part of the Bills' receivers group includes Curtis Samuel, rookie Keon Coleman, and Mack Hollins.

In addition, Cooper will not cost the Bills a significant amount on their salary cap for the remainder of the 2024 season. For a team that's already tight against the salary cap, Cooper will cost less than $900,000 against Buffalo.

It is unknown, at this time, whether Cooper will make his debut with the Bills when they next face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
