OPINION: Possible partners, cost for Bills to trade up in Round 1

Some potential teams the Bills may be able to deal with

Orchard Park, N.Y. (WGR 550) - There’s been a lot of talk, and even reports this week that the Buffalo Bills are looking to trade up in Thursday night’s first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

The specific target for the Bills with a potential trade up the draft board has widely been speculated to be for a wide receiver.

Sitting with the 28th overall selection, there are several teams ahead of the Bills they could try to make a deal with, depending how the board falls. But which teams would be most likely trade partners? How much would it cost to get to those spots?

Here are some teams I’ve identified, and what it may cost for the Bills to trade to those spots, from the lowest spot to the highest:

20.) Pittsburgh Steelers

Target: Brian Thomas Jr. - Wide receiver - LSU

The Steelers can go in a number of different directions, and a move down eight spots would still allow them to grab a solid player they can use, while also add to their seven overall selections.

Approximate cost:

Bills acquire:
- 20th overall pick

Steelers acquire:
- 28th overall pick
- 128th overall pick (fourth round)
- Next year’s second-round pick (via Vikings)

19.) Los Angeles Rams

Target: Brian Thomas Jr. - Wide receiver - LSU

The Rams haven't had a first-round pick since 2017. They obviously aren't afraid to part with it.

Approximate cost:

Bills acquire:
- 19th overall pick
- 217th overall pick (sixth round)

Rams acquire:
- 28th overall pick
- 128th overall pick (fourth round)
- 144th overall pick (fifth round)
- Next year’s second-round pick (via Vikings)

16.) Seattle Seahawks

Target: Brian Thomas Jr. - Wide receiver - LSU

The Seahawks have never been shy about moving in the draft, and they don't pick again until the third round (81st overall). They could use some extra capital.

Approximate cost:

Bills acquire:
- 16th overall pick
- 102nd overall (fourth round)

Seahawks acquire:
- 28th overall pick
- 60th overall pick (second round)
- Next year’s second-round pick (via Vikings)

12.) Denver Broncos

Target: Rome Odunze - Wide receiver - Washington // Brian Thomas Jr. - Wide receiver - LSU

The Broncos don't have a second-round pick in this year's draft. They are also rumored to want a quarterback. If all the quarterbacks they like enough are gone, they could decide to move down, pick up huge capital, and maybe even move back up later.

For the Bills, this would make sense if Odunze fell this far, or if Beane really loves Thomas Jr. enough to make sure he doesn't lose him.

Approximate cost:

Bills acquire:
12th overall pick

Broncos acquire:
- 28th overall pick
- 128th overall pick (fourth round)
- Next year’s first-round pick

9.) Chicago Bears

Target: Rome Odunze - Wide receiver - Washington

This move would, of course, require giving up massive draft capital, including, no doubt, next year's first-round pick. If Beane loves Odunze that much, he could try to pull off a 2011 Julio Jones-type deal to make sure he gets him.

The Bears only have four picks in the entire draft, and will already have selected quarterback Caleb Williams first overall.

Approximate cost:

Bills acquire:
- 9th overall pick

Bears acquire:
- 28th overall pick
- 60th overall pick (second round)
- 133rd overall (fourth round)
- Next year’s first-round pick
- Next year's sixth-round pick
