Josh Allen receiving most support from bettors to win NFL MVP

At one sports book, he's doubling up Patrick Mahomes

Everybody is expecting a big year out of Josh Allen — including sports bettors.

ESPN’s David Purdum reported on Wednesday the Buffalo Bills quarterback has attracted “more bets to win the Associated Press MVP award than any other player at multiple sports books.” That includes BetMGM, where his volume of bets is almost twice as much as Patrick Mahomes.

Caesars Sportsbook lists Allen third (12-1) behind Mahomes (5-1) and Aaron Rodgers (10-1). Rodgers won his third MVP in 2020.

While Allen’s and Rodgers’ odds are similar, the smarter money is on Allen — at least according to history. Only four players in NFL history — Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Joe Montana and Jim Brown — have won back-to-back MVPs.

Allen finished second in MVP voting last year, throwing for 4,544 yards, 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. He also ran for 421 yards and eight touchdowns, and even reeled in a receiving score.

The Bills sufficiently rewarded Allen for his breakout campaign, signing him to a six-year, $258 million extension last month with $150 million in overall guarantees. He’s believed to have the most money fully guaranteed in an NFL contract.

Though Allen’s contract may carry more risk than other big quarterback deals, it will likely look more reasonable as the years progressed. The NFL’s new $113 billion media rights agreement is expected to make revenue explode.

Allen is expected to explode this season, with Stefon Diggs once again at his side. The returns of Cole Beasley and Gabriel Davis and addition of veteran wideout Emmanuel Sanders round out the receiving corps.

With the Bills widely considered Super Bowl favorites, there is an expectation that Allen will follow up his breakout effort with another stellar effort. The Bills’ season is riding on it, along with a lot of money.
