Buffalo Bills running back Zack Moss is coming off a rollercoaster weekend. The second-year back buried his aunt on Saturday, who passed away recently.
Then on Sunday, he scored two fourth quarter touchdowns in Buffalo’s 35-0 drubbing of the Miami Dolphins in South Florida. It was a 24 hours that signifies the ups-and-downs of life itself.
“I had a long weekend,” Moss told reporters following the win. “I had to bury my aunt yesterday morning. So then just having to come out here 24 hours later, and have a fumble in a big game that we definitely needed, I just had to just kind of get my mental right and kind of just switch over.”
Moss is alluding to his fumble in the first quarter, which came while the Bills were already leading 14-0.
Despite the mistake, the Bills sprinted ahead Sunday and never looked back. They looked like the Super Bowl contenders we all thought they would be.
With Josh Allen still scuffling - throwing 17-of-33 for 179 yards, two touchdowns and one interception - Buffalo’s backfield carried the load. Devin Singletary exploded for 83 yards on 13 carries, including a 46-yard touchdown sprint on the second offensive play of the game for the Bills. There wasn’t a single Miami defender in sight.
That wasn’t the case on Moss’ first touchdown run. The 2020 third round pick barreled through multiple Dolphins players before reaching the end zone. Later in the fourth quarter, Moss scooted his way in for a one-yard score.
The 23-year-old simply would not be denied.
We talk all of the time about the mental tenacity of pro athletes, but Moss’ efforts were simply extraordinary. It must’ve been an unbelievable burden for him to take the field so soon after a tragic passing. And he excelled along the way.
That means more than any win.
