Zellweger was acquired by the Sabres this past Friday in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks for a 2026 second-round pick (45th overall) and forward prospect Anton Wahlberg.
The 22-year-old left-shot defenseman played a career-high 76 games with Anaheim last season, scoring seven goals and adding a career-best 15 assists for 22 points. Over his 164 games in the NHL, all with the Ducks, Zellweger has registered 51 points (16+35).
This contract extension will keep Zellweger with the Sabres through the 2028-29 season. The defenseman was only one of two restricted free agents for the Sabres this offseason, along with forward Peyton Krebs.
The native of Calgary, Alberta joins a defensive group in Buffalo that already consists of Rasmus Dahlin, Owen Power, Mattias Samuelsson, Connor Timmins, Zach Metsa and newly-acquired Louis Crevier.
Zellweger was taken in the second round (34th overall) of the 2021 NHL Draft.
