Hate crimes targeting LGBTQ+ Americans remain alarmingly high, despite an overall drop in violent crime nationwide, according to the FBI's 2024 report. Over 2,200 hate crimes were based on sexual orientation and more than 500 on gender identity — only slight declines from last year.
Advocates say anti-LGBTQ+ political rhetoric is fueling the violence. The Human Rights Campaign called the numbers a "national emergency," urging leaders to stop the attacks and support LGBTQ+ communities.
