Iowa State Senator Tony Bisignano delivered a passionate rebuke to Republican lawmakers just before they passed a bill removing gender identity from the state's civil rights law. The bill, signed by Governor Kim Reynolds, eliminates protections for trans individuals in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Bisignano condemned the measure as an attack on transgender Iowans, accusing lawmakers of ignoring the voices of thousands who protested the bill. He also criticized the lack of debate and called out the hypocrisy of those citing religious faith while supporting policies he sees as discriminatory. Most of you don't even know somebody who's transgender," he said. "You don't even know 'em, but you hate 'em. Shame on all of you Christians "I don't know where you go to church, and I don't know what you read, but being a good Christian doesn't take much. Do unto others. Take care of your neighbor." Despite the bill's passage, Bisignano vowed to continue fighting for trans rights.
