A former cop officer with the National City PD in San Diego has been awarded $10 million in damages after suing for harassment and discrimination.
Ashley Cummins, who identifies as a lesbian, claimed that male officers demanded women be submissive or engage in sexual relations to fit in, and that she was passed over for promotions despite being more qualified than her male colleagues.
The jury found the department liable, awarding her the $10 million, including compensation for lost wages and emotional distress.
The National City attorney said the city is considering an appeal, but councilmembers acknowledge the need for reform and accountability. More here
