A new Texas state bill would charge trans people with "gender identity fraud," making it illegal to identify as trans on official documents.
Filed last week by Republican Rep. Tom Oliverson, the bill would make it a state jail felony to misrepresent one's sex to a government entity or employer. The penalty could include up to two years in jail and a fine of $10,000.
While the bill currently lacks co-sponsors and may not pass, it is a sign of growing anti-trans legislation in Texas.
Over the past decade, the state has led efforts to restrict transgender rights, from "bathroom bills" to other legislative measures. In 2025, nearly 170 bills targeting the LGBTQ community have already been introduced in Texas.
