Ariel has surfaced from under the sea.
Recent photos have emerged of Halle Bailey on set of the new Disney live-action film “The Little Mermaid.”
The budding actress, 21, was pictured in a mermaid’s tail to film beachside scenes in Italy alongside co-starr Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric, reported The Daily Mail.
According to photos obtained by the outlet, the pair seem to be filming the famous scene in which Ariel rescues Prince Eric after a shipwreck as the two were seen lying on the sandy shore while Ariel tries to wake him up.
Bailey, who appeared in the ABC series "Grown-ish," will join other noteable stars on the adaptation, including Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and "Hamilton" star Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian.
Bailey's casting as the mermaid princess shows Disney's efforts to diversify stories that previously featured predominantly white cast members/characters.
While the actress, who is also one half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle, did face backlash for her role as Ariel, Bailey has said she is not concerned with the negativity. "I just feel like this role is something bigger than me, and greater, and it's going to be beautiful," she previously told Variety. "I'm just so excited to be a part of it."
"The Little Mermaid," led by “Marry Poppins Returns” director Rob Marshall, is currently in production and does not yet have a confirmed release date.
While the project experienced major delays due to the coronavirus pandemic, and production was put on hold, it is expected to hit the big screens in 2022.
