Boston ranked best hockey city in country, per study

Boston has already won in hockey, and the Bruins haven't even finished steamrolling the Blues in the Stanley Cup Final.

Our fair city is the best hockey town in the country, according to WalletHub. The financial services website ranked 73 U.S. cities using a complicated formula that calculates 21 different sets of hockey-related data –– from ticket prices to the performance of the region's teams. Boston is No. 1, scoring the highest overall score of 61.64.

We are ranked No. 1 among NCAA cities –– Beanpot! –– and No. 3 among NHL towns. Detroit and Pittsburgh are rated ahead of us in the latter category.

Some of the results on this list are surprising, with maligned West Coast and Southeast markets such as Anaheim and Tampa Bay cracking the top-10. It shows there's still a snobbery in some hockey circles, as evidenced when Northeast-based radio hosts hang up on a Hurricanes beat writer due to his southern accent.

The overall list, however, is highly concentrated in the northern parts of the country. New York and Chicago round out the top five. St. Louis is at No. 11, and they're letting their pride for the Blues be known.

Game 1 drew a 29 rating in St. Louis, opposed to a 25.2 rating in Boston.
