One contending team with a bullpen problem is reportedly pursuing Craig Kimbrel, and of course it isn't the Red Sox.
The Cubs are "pushing hard" to sign the still-free agent closer, according to the Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Chicago, which is tied with the Brewers atop the NL Central, has blown 11 saves this season. If its bullpen was better, they would almost certainly be in first place.
The Cubs did receive some help Tuesday, when Pedro Strop was activated from the Injured List. He threw a perfect ninth in the victory.
Though the Red Sox have blown nine saves so far this season, there's been no indication they're seeking to bring Kimbrel abroad, or any additional bullpen arms. With the trade deadline truncated to July 31 –– the August waiver period has been eliminated –– there could be an earlier run on relievers per usual.
Kimbrel, unequivocally, is the best guy still out there. Assuming it's an one-year deal, this would be a wise investment for the bullpen-desperate Cubs.
