The Red Sox' worst nightmare might come to fruition. David Price says he hasn't thought about opting out.
Price, who has an additional four years and $108 million remaining on his contract, told FS1's Jon Morosi he isn't even considering free agency right now.
"I want to win, I want to win here and I want to win now. We all know the amount of ability we have in this clubhouse ... I'm focused on winning right now. I haven't thought about opting out," Price said, per Morosi' Twitter account.
While some of Price's talk might just be bluster, his bluntness is notable, given his passive-aggressive comedic stylings. Three weeks ago, when Price was asked about his upcoming start against the Yankees, he said he would be unavailable due to playing too much Fortnite.
Price got shelled July 1 at Yankee Stadium, surrendering eight runs and five home runs. He followed up that abomination by hitting three batters and allowing four runs in 4.2 innings against the Royals.
This season, Price is 9-6 with a 4.44 ERA. He missed large portions of last season with elbow and arm troubles, only making 11 starters and appearing out of the bullpen in September.
When the Red Sox first signed Price, 32, to his record-setting seven year, $217 million, they likely envisioned he would be dominant over the first three seasons, making the backend more palatable. But now, this looks like it could be one of the worst contracts in baseball history. Even if Price finishes strong, it's hard to see him earning more than $108 million on the open market.
Financially, it makes complete sense for Price to opt-in. The fact this is even debatable speaks to the level of the lefty's apparent agitation with Boston.
