Red Sox reportedly targeting Orioles closer Zach Britton

Per usual, the Red Sox are reportedly looking to upgrade their bullpen at the trade deadline. One of their top targets is Orioles closer Zach Britton, per FanCred's Jon Heyman

Britton, 30, was perhaps the most dominant relief pitcher in baseball just two years ago. He led the league in saves (47) and also finished fourth in Cy Young voting, featuring an incredible stretch of dominance to finish out the season. The left-hander only allowed one run over his final 40 appearances.

Since then, Britton has fallen off a bit, missing the first 2.5 months of this season with an achilles tear. He's posted a 3.68 ERA in 15 appearances.

The Orioles appear mutually interested in the Red Sox. The Globe's Nick Cafardo tweets they've been scouting Double-A Portland for potential targets, including third baseman Michael Chavis. While the 2014 first-round pick missed 80 games to serve a PED suspension, he remains the top-ranked prospect in the Red Sox' system, according to MLB Pipeline. Chavis is batting just .150 in five games with Portland this season.

In addition to the Red Sox, Heyman reports the Cubs, Yankees, Indians, Braves and "several other" clubs could be interested in pursuing Britton. Cleveland pulled off a big deal for two relievers Thursday, acquiring lefty Brad Hand and righty Adam Cimber from the Padres for top catching prospect Francisco Mejia. That's a hefty price to pay, but the Indians were left with little choice. They have the second-worst bullpen ERA in baseball (5.28), thanks to putrid performances from Dan Otero and Cody Allen. Relief ace Andrew Miller is on the DL and hasn't appeared in a game since May.

Hand, who's signed through 2021, was reportedly one of the Red Sox' top targets. But given the price Cleveland paid to acquire him, it's uncertain whether the Red Sox even had enough minor league chips to bring him aboard. Thanks to several big deals –– Chris Sale, Craig Kimbrel –– their farm system is barren entering the deadline. On top of that, top pitching prospect Jay Groome is out with Tommy John surgery.

With limited minor league assets, the Red Sox could have some trepidation about trading Chavis for a rental relief arm. But that might be the necessary price. Give how far the Red Sox have gone, Dave Dombrowski could be tempted to just go for it. They have the best record in baseball, and are set to lose prime pieces from their roster over each of the next four winters (Kimbrel in 2018, Chris Sale and J.D. Martinez in 2019, Xander Bogaerts and Rick Porcello in 2020, Mookie Betts in 2021).

The Red Sox may not be this well-positioned to win the World Series for a long time.
