The Mets had been engaged with several teams, including the Padres and Twins, over Syndergaard, who has had his first fully healthy season since 2016 and is 7-5 with a 4.10 ERA in 2019. There had been speculation that the Red Sox could swing a deal for Syndergaard as well as Edwin Diaz, the latter of whom Boston has been reportedly interested in but may pass on.

The Red Sox are expected to make a run at some "lesser arms" rather than top-end starters or big-name closers before the 5 p.m. trade deadline.
