Just over 24 hours before NBA free agency offically kicks off, the Celtics extended a qualifying offer to center Daniel Theis on Saturday, making him a restricted free agent, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

June 29, 2019 The qualifying offer allows Boston to match any offer made to Theis in free agency if they want to retain him, which they may after trading Aron Baynes and Al Horford reportedly expected to leave.
The German big man averaged 5.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in 13.8 minutes per game for Boston in 2018-19.
Theis remains an option as a big off the bench, while the Celtics look for a starting option in the frontcourt with the room exception.
