Report: Cameron Meredith a Patriots WR option

The Patriots search for help at the wide open wide receiver position is apparently ongoing.

According to ESPN, former Saints and Bears receiver Cameron Meredith could be an option for New England at this point.

I'm told that free agent WR Cameron Meredith is in the New England area now, again, vying to become the #Patriots newest wide receiver. Meredith visited the team a couple days ago.

The 26-year-old Meredith is a 6-3, 207-pound veteran of three NFL seasons in Chicago and New Orleans. His best year came in 2016 with the Bears, when he caught 66 passes for 888 yards with four touchdowns.

Just as his career seemed to be taking off in Chicago, Meredith suffered a severe knee injury in the 2017 preseason. He went down with a torn ACL and other damage, causing him to miss the entire season.

Meredith signed with the Saints as a restricted free agent last season, catching just nine passes in six games before again landing on IR with a knee injury. He was released by New Orleans on July 29.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Meredith was a victim of a prank call during the 2015 NFL Draft when he was coming out of Illinois State. Apparently a caller pretended to be Bill Belichick saying that the Patriots were taking the receiver in the third round with the 97th pick. That never happened and Meredith went undrafted.

Now Meredith might actually end up in New England after all. And a Patriots wide receiver depth chart that's very much a work in progress this summer – especially with Julian Edelman out of action on NFI with a thumb injury – could add another veteran option.
