Once upon a time, Jonas Gray was the talk of the NFL.
A practice squad call-up, on Nov. 16, 2014 Gray ran the ball 38 times for 199 yards and the first four rushing touchdowns of his career in a Patriots 42-20 win over the Colts in Indianapolis.
Gray was released by the Patriots less than a year later and was out of the NFL altogether by the end of training camp with the Jaguars in August 2016.
But four-plus years removed from his one-hit-wonder performance against the Colts, Gray apparently hasn’t given up on his professional football dreams. This past weekend in St. Louis the running back was one of 140 players to take part in the XFL’s eighth and final summer showcase as the rebooted league prepares for a return to action in 2020.
The event also featured such other former NFL players as running back Trent Richardson, quarterbacks Zach Mettenberger and Connor Cook and another former Patriot in tight end Clay Harbor.
