New England’s first practice of the regular season, less than 24 hours after the team got to the 53-man roster mandate, took place on the lower practice field behind Gillette Stadium Sunday afternoon.
Every member of the roster was present and accounted for during the short stretching session that was open to the gathered media.
Veteran linebacker Jamie Collins wore a new, regular season legal-jersey No. 58. Collins had worn No. 8 during the preseason. Another notable number change was for undrafted wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, who went from preseason No. 9 to regular season No. 80.
Not on the field for practice were Benjamin Watson (4 games) and Lance Kendricks (1), veteran tight ends beginning their NFL suspensions to open the new season.
There were also eight guys who are not on the 53-man roster who are likely the core members of the Patriots practice squad to open the season. That list, seemingly all guys who spent the summer/training camp in Foxborough appeared to include:
47 FB Jakob Johnson (International exemption as the 11th member of the squad)
48 LB Calvin Munson
59 LB Terez Hall
68 OL Tyree St. Louis
72 OL Dan Skipper
82 TE Stephen Anderson
92 DL Nick Thurman
94 DL Ufomab Kamalu
