While there seems to be some confusion as to whether it was speculation or actual reporting this week making the 49ers a possible team of interest in the Tom Brady free agency sweepstakes, talk of TB12 landing in San Francisco spread like wildfire.
It’s certainly easy to understand why Brady might want to leave the Patriots to head west. He grew up a 49ers fan and idolized Joe Montana. Coming off a Super Bowl appearance, San Francisco offers many of the things an aging quarterback might want, including a good offensive line, a consistent running game, an elite tight end and a very impressive defense. It’s all under the leadership of a respected, offensive-minded head coach.
But the reasoning behind the 49ers wanting to swap out 28-year-old Jimmy Garoppolo for his soon-to-be 43-year-old former New England mentor is far less obvious.
