The Patriots made in interesting move on Tuesday that had nothing to do with the NFL’s afternoon trade deadline.

According to The MMQB, New England is cutting veteran kicker Mike Nugent.

Nugent signed with the Patriots on Oct. 3 after he won a group tryout session following the team’s placement of mainstay kicker Stephon Gostkowski on injured reserve.

In four games with New England, Nugent hit five of his eight field goal attempts and 15 of 16 PATs. He had a tough evening last Sunday against the Browns in the rain, having a 29-yard kick blocked and missing another 34-yard attempt wide left.

Nugent’s dismissal comes on the same day that the Falcons cut veteran Matt Bryant and replaced him with Younghoe Koo. Koo took part in the same open tryout session as Nugent after the Gostkowski injury and actually spent Oct. 4 through Oct. 15 on the Patriots practice squad.

Though Bryant also missed a pair of field goals over the weekend – the 44-year-old is just nine of 14 on field goal attempts this season, though four of the misses were from 50-plus – he has a stronger leg than Nugent, who did not attempt a kick longer than 40 yards in his short time in New England.

UPDATE 5:15 p.m.: The Patriots have made this move official, and reportedly have signed kicker Nick Folk.
