Few things spur sports debate more than lists.
There may be no better time for a list of the NFL’s top 100 players than this dead period in the league’s calendar between the end of OTAs/minicamps and the opening of training camps in late July.
So it is that CBSSports.com unveiled its list of the Top 100 NFL Players of 2019 this week, a ranking that includes four members of the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots and one other guy who jumped ship from the squad in free agency this offseason.
Not surprisingly, Tom Brady is the top New England representative on the list at No. 6 overall, though CBSSports.com seems to feel the need to defend the elite selection after the quarterback’s relatively down 2018 campaign.
New England then goes 60 spots until Super Bowl MVP wide receiver Julian Edelman’s pick at No. 90. Guard Shaq Mason just makes the cut to close things out in the final spot at No. 100.
CBS does also list safety Devin McCourty among those who “just missed.”
Trey Flowers, the New England defensive star who signed a $90 million contract with the Lions in March, ranked No. 81 overall.
Two players who the Patriots had to go through on the way to another Super Bowl ring – Rams Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald and Chiefs NFL MVP quarterback Patrick Mahomes – ranked No. 1 and No. 2 overall, respectively.
