Urban Meyer: Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham going to have 'great' year

There are plenty of opinions floating around these days regarding what kind of future second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham is in for with the Patriots.

Of course, some opinions come with more credibility than others.

Appearing on the "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" on Wednesday, former Ohio State and Florida head coach Urban Meyer offered up his thoughts on Stidham, the former fourth-round pick out of Auburn who is likely in line to take over the starting job in New England this fall after Tom Brady moved on to the Buccaneers this spring via free agency.

Meyer has longstanding relationship with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

While Meyer seems to like Stidham's talents, having recruited him early on out of high school in Texas, the coach likes the young quarterback's chances to succeed more because of where he will be playing and who he'll be playing for.

"The common denominator of every great quarterback is he's on a great team," Meyer began. "The great quarterbacks who go to bad teams and all of the sudden become bad quarterbacks. It's hard for me at times to understand the media and often the fans, they have a bad team so it's the quarterback's fault.

"I think Jarrett Stidham, you put him with Bill Belichick , Josh McDaniels, that system, get ready for... I can't say he's going to be the next Tom Brady, but I'm sure he'll have a great (year)," Meyer said. "[Belichick> did it with Matt Cassel. He did it obviously with Tom Brady and [Jimmy Garoppolo>. They're gonna make that quarterback a good player."

For what it's worth, "The Herd" promoted Meyer's comments on Twitter by quoting the coach as saying the Patriots would make Stidham "a great player" when in fact he said they would make the quarterback "a good player."

Stidham played in just three games in New England last fall as Brady's primary backup. The rookie completed two of his four pass attempts, although one was also an interception returned for a touchdown in Week 3 agaianst the Jets.
