49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was in the news Monday regarding an exclusive interview that came out from Bleacher Report in which the former Patriot QB describes, among other things, his relationship with Tom Brady.
In the story, Garoppolo says the two quarterbacks got along, but he noted, "there were always times where we wanted to kill each other." Garoppolo also explained to the author, Joon Lee, that he quietly believes he's better than Brady.
Lee joined Dale & Keefe Monday afternoon to talk about the story and further explain the relationship between the two former teammates.
"I can say with full confidence that Jimmy admires Tom Brady," Lee explained. "He views Tom as a role model since basically day one of [Garoppolo] becoming a quarterback junior year of high school. Tom was the guy that Jimmy formulated his throwing motion around. ... Jimmy really looks up to Tom not only on the field but off the field as well, how he carries his business and goes about things."
Lee argued that Garoppolo pushed Brady to become better, and he has the stats to prove it. In three full seasons with Brady at the helm with Garoppolo playing backup, Brady threw for a completion percentage at 65.1 percent and 97 touchdowns to just 18 interceptions, all from the ages of 37-39.
"I think Jimmy really pushed Tom to become a better version of himself," Lee said. "For whatever reason Tom saw something in Jimmy ... but at the end of the day the situation didn't work out and Jimmy wasn't going to be the heir to New England like a lot of people wanted him to be."
