The Florida school shooting hit Cubs All-Star and former Red Sox draftee Anthony Rizzo particularly hard -- he's a graduate of Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Parkland, where 17 students were killed on Wednesday by a former classmate.
Rizzo took to Twitter to offer his condolences and demand change.
"Parkland and Coral Springs please stay strong!" Rizzo wrote. "This is out of control and our country is in desperate need for change. I hope in this darkest of times back home this brings everyone together and we can find love. You're all in my prayers."
The Red Sox drafted Rizzo in the sixth round of the 2007 draft out of Marjory Stoneham. He turned down a scholarship to Florida Atlantic to sign for $325,000. Rizzo beat cancer as a Red Sox minor leaguer in 2008 before being traded to the Padres in the 2010 deal that brought Adrian Gonzalez to Boston.
The Cubs acquired him in 2012 and he has since made three All-Star teams, won a Silver Slugger and Gold Glove, and played an integral part in Chicago's 2016 World Series champion team.
This week, however, he grieves for his hometown.
