Pedro Martinez won a World Series and two Cy Young Awards with the Red Sox. Before he knew how magical his Hall of Fame run in Boston would be, he had very different ideas about where he might make his name.
Appearing on the Rich Eisen Show, Martinez said that he grew up a Yankees fan, once spent $250 on a Reggie Jackson autograph, and asked the Expos three times to trade him to New York before the deal that sent him to Boston.
"That was the first team I asked to be traded to," Martinez said. "It didn't fall. The trade didn't fall."
Martinez went on to explain that seeing friends traded by the Dodgers, and then being moved by the Dodgers to the Expos, himself, made him stop considering the game like a fan.
