Red Sox catcher Christian Vazquez wore the protective "oven mitt" you see more and more baserunners sporting after jamming his thumb on a double in Boston.
He blames it for the broken pinky he suffered on Saturday in Kansas City that landed him on the disabled list.
"That was my first time wearing it. And the last time," Vazquez told reporters in Kansas City, including the Boston Herald's Michael Silverman. "It got stuck when I slid."
Vazquez was injured in the seventh inning while sliding into second during a delayed steal. He remained in the game behind the plate for one more inning before swelling made it difficult to throw.
"I'm tough," he said.
He's also frustrated with the mitt that was supposed to protect him.
"They made me wear it, because I jammed my thumb in Boston on a double," he said. "They made me wear it to protect the thumb. It got stuck in the dirt."
Manager Alex Cora told reporters that Vazquez will see a hand specialist in Boston on Monday. Vazquez said he hopes to return in two or three weeks.
