Michael Chavis is considered the best of the Red Sox position prospects, but he won't be playing for a while.

Chavis on Sunday detailed the left oblique strain that has sidelined him since Wednesday and has left him with no timetable to return.

"It was a swing in open cage," Chavis said. "I wish I had some information. But it's kind of seeing what happens day to day. Seeing if things get better. Seeing how it feels when we come in every single day. But doing a bunch of treatment, doing as much as I can to get out there as soon as possible."

Chavis, who hit 31 homers between High A and Double A last year, believes he's improving.

"I'll say today feels better than it has since it happened," he said. "So I'm feeling pretty positive about how it's going. Every day's been a little bit better and today was significantly better, working out, running on the elliptical and stuff like that. So I'm pretty positive about things are going."

Chavis had never experienced an oblique injury before.

"It's a little bit different," he said. "They said that obliques are a little sensitive, baseball being so rotational with throwing and hitting. But one of the big things I'm focusing on is I don't want it to come back during the season, so it would be better to take care of it now then have it come back midseason and have it be a big issue then. I'm just going to do everything I can to make sure I not only come back but make sure it doesn't return."
